Girls’ Generation member and actress Kwon Yuri has taken her commitment to acting to the next level, undergoing a dramatic physical transformation for her latest film, Somebody.
A Bold Change for a Challenging Role
During her recent appearance on Lee Eun Ji’s Music Plaza on KBS Cool FM, Yuri opened up about the lengths she went to in order to embody her character, Min, a specialized cleaning service worker who cleans up after the deceased.

When asked if preparing for such an intense role was difficult, Yuri admitted that she made significant changes to her appearance to fully immerse herself in the character.
A New Look to Match Min’s Personality
Since Min is a cynical and emotionally reserved character, Yuri adjusted her hairstyle by covering her eyebrows with bangs to create a more somber and subdued image. Co-star Kwak Sun Young also revealed that Yuri altered her skin tone to better align with her character’s background.
Going even further, Yuri stopped wearing makeup and added freckles to enhance her natural skin texture. But the most striking transformation came when she intentionally gained 7kg (about 15 lbs) to realistically portray Min’s life and struggles. She explained that the weight gain was also influenced by her simultaneous filming schedule for the tvN drama Parole Examiner Lee.
Breaking the Idol Stereotype
Throughout the interview, Yuri emphasized her desire to expand beyond her idol image and establish herself as a serious actress. She took on these dramatic changes to fully embody her character and showcase her versatility in the acting world.
The film Somebody was officially released in South Korea on March 12 and is now screening in theaters nationwide.
Yuri’s transformation proves her dedication to her craft—are you excited to see her in this new role?
